Paul van Kemenade (Rotterdam /the Netherlands 1957)
altosax- composer- bandleader-'Stranger than Paranoia' festival

Started: at the age of 13 and started in 1974 study at the Brabants Conservatory Tilburg and the last year of his study in Amsterdam.

Professional: 1976 he started in a cabaretshow and played in dance/nightclubs till 1980 and since 1977 started with improvisation music and started up own bands / projects playing his own compositions. With a.o. duo van Rossum/van Kemenade, Palinckx & Palinckx, Podium Trio, Gemeente- reinigingsorkest Vaalbleek and Vaalbleek Vokaal by Niko Langenhuijsen, Brevis, bands under own name, dance-projects, big bands, with performers/poets and painters, de Orkaan with a.o. Han Bennink,and Sean Bergin, the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra by Alex Von Schlippenbach with a.o.Kenny Wheeler - Ed Thigpen - Benny Bailey -Gerd Dudek, with the Surinam Music Ensemble, with Aki Takase, Bizar Habit, Eric van der Westen octet, with John Engels/Jasper van 't Hof/Eric Vloeimans.

End eighties and beginning nineties : guest co-leadership with Herman de Wit's workshoporchestra de Boventoon and he was playing (and still is) in a lot of ad hoc ensembles. During 20 years ('79 - '99) he tought hundreds of workshops throughout the whole country and conducted his workshop- orchestra Brabants Leerorkest for 5 years. From 1985-2005 he played leadalto in Willem van Manen's modern big band 'Contraband' and works 25 years in 2007 with his own quintet which have performed with brass bands, popgroups, symphonic orchestras and guest musicians from all around the world.

  • 1999 "VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs", oeuvre award for professional jazzmusicians in the Netherlands for their contribution to Dutch jazzmusic.
  • 2007 a Royal Decoration (lid in de Orde van Oranje Nassau)
  • 2008 'Antony Kok' Art Award

occasionally with 'Podium Trio' with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Cornell Rochester, with Peter Hofland (electronic music), with Buddha Building (DJ / sampling performer), in a duo with flamenco-guitarist Maurice Leenaars, in trio with Palinckx/ Van Kemenade/ Palinckx (guitar/alto/bass) and as a soloist in several groups/projects.
He has played all throughout Europe, Canada, South-Africa, West-Africa, Indonesia and participates on almost 50 LP's and CD's.

He still teaches now and than guestworkshops and is living in Tilburg since 1974. He was for 7 years programmer of the jazzseries at the 'Theatre Festival Boulevard' in Den Bosch and in 1993 he initiated the 'Stranger than Para..noia' festival at the 'Paradox' in Tilburg and is eversince artistic director/programmer of this succesfull small musicfestival.

He has played with a.o.
