Paul van Kemenade (Rotterdam/the Netherlands 1957, altosax-
composer- bandleader-'Stranger than Paranoia' festival)
His musical career started at the age of 13 by studying
saxophone and in 1974 he began to study music at the Brabants
Conservatory in Tilburg, the Netherlands. His professional
career began in 1976 when he was asked to join the 'Gemeentereinigingsorkest
Vaalbleek; a band led by bassplayer/pianist/composer
NikoLangenhuijsen.
From the very beginning in 1977, Paul started to set up his
own bands / projects , playing his compositions.
He worked as a sideman in a lot of groups and played in
several duo's, trio's, quartets and quintets as well as in big
bands, e.g. "The Band", duo van Rossum/van Kemenade,
"Ed de Vos Prisma Orkest", "Palinckx &
Palinckx", "Gemeentereinigingsorkest Vaalbleek"
and "Vaalbleek Vokaal" by Niko Langenhuijsen, "Brevis",
groups under own name: trio/quartet/quintet/sextet, several
dance-projects (a.o. the famous RAZ dance company), big bands,
several projects with performers, poets and painters, "de
Orkaan", with Bennink, Glerum, Mengelberg/Kühne, Wierbos
and Bergin, "The Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra",
by Alexander von Schlippenbach with a.o. Kenny Wheeler, Ed
Thigpen, Benny Bailey, Gerd Dudek, "The Surinam Music
Ensemble", a duo with Aki Takase, "Bizar Habit",
Eric van der Westen octet, a quintet with John Engels/Jasper
van 't Hof/Eric Vloeimans and Van der Westen.
End '80, beginning 90's he has been asked by Herman de Wit for
a guest co-leadership with Herman for 2 years of the
workshoporchestra "de Boventoon" and played in a lot
of ad hoc ensembles. During 20 years ('79 - '99) he tought
over hundreds of workshops throughout the whole country and
for 5 years he conducted his workshoporchestra the
"Brabants Leerorkest".
From 1985-2005 he played lead in Willem van Manen's modern big
band 'Contraband' and he had his sextet for a few years and
works in 2007 25 years with his own quintet which performed
with brass bands, popgroups, symphonic orchestras and
different guest musicians from all around the world.
Awards
- 1984 he received the "Podium Prijs" of the S.J.I.N.,
the Dutch Jazz Foundation
- 1998 the 'Jazz in Duketown Award 1998'
- 1999 the "Moderne Industriestad Prijs Tilburg"
- 1999 the "VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs", an oeuvre award for
professional jazzmusiciens in the Netherlands for their
contribution to Dutch jazzmusic.
- 2007 a Royal Decoration (lid in de Orde van Oranje
Nassau), for his musical contribution and bridgebuilding
work to society
- 2008 Antony Kok Art award

He still teaches guest workshops and is living in Tilburg
since 1974. 7 years he was programmer of the jazzseries at the
'Theatre Festival Boulevard' in Den Bosch and . In 1993 he
initiated the 'Stranger than Para..noia' festival in 'Paradox'
in Tilburg and is eversince the artistic director/programmer
of this very succesfull festival.
