In a sentimental mood

Duo Braam & Van Kemenade

Duo MICHIEL BRAAM (1964, piano) & PAUL VAN KEMENADE (1957, altsaxofoon)

You know (off course) there is a chance of 1 on 365 to be born on May 17th. The odds of getting the Podium Prize is 1 on 600.094.225. From every winner of the Podium Prize, one third once received the Boy Edgar Prize. The chance to find a duo from which both members meet all these conditions is 1 to 1.314.206.352.750. So about 1 to 1,3 trillion. This is a pretty unique duo.

Borderhopping

BORDERHOPPING

Duits-Nederlandse samenwerking
Eckard Koltermann Quartet
        featuring
Paul van Kemenade & Wolter Wierbos

Eckard Koltermann - bas clarinet, baritonsaxofoon
Paul van Kemenade - altsaxofoon
Wolter Wierbos - trombone
Stevko Busch - piano
Markus Conrads - contrabas

CD 'Uncovered'

CD 'Uncovered'  nominated for the Jazz Edison Award 2002 ('Dutch Grammy') and for the Edison Jazz Public Award 2002

VANDOORN TRIO (NL)

Ineke van Doorn - vocals
Marc van Vugt - guitars
Paul van Kemenade - altosax

Dutch singer-vocal artist Ineke van Doorn and guitarist-composer Marc van Vugt, together forming the core of Vandoorn, are best described as lyrical singer-songwriters to whom improvisation is of paramount importance. Special guest, altoplayer and 'Boy Edgar Prize' winner Paul van Kemenade, fits perfectly well in this combination. They play personal interpretations of jazz and pop standards and a lot of new repertoire. Some of the songs are sung in Dutch. Effortlessly they change positions as soloist and accompanist. Chance and spontaneity play an important role. The international press have called Vandoorn adventurous, while their concerts have been described as exciting. Loose and fun! The repertoire is a combination of the 'Uncovered' tour and new written material, mostly by Van Vugt/Van Doorn.

Pressquotes

- USA : David Lewis, Cadance :
'Uncovered' by Vandoorn is a freewheeling romp by a very unusual trio configuration. The delight of this session is palpable and nothing is predictable and such an adventurous and satisfying set of trio improvisations.

- France : Jazz Notes:
This Dutchwoman, with her full and sensual voice, possesses both technical mastery and deep warmth. The mutual understanding between the three musicians is clear and tangible.

- Netherlands : Armand Serpenti, Trouw :
Hot and fragile at the same time.

- Netherlands: Hans Rooseboom, BN/De Stem :
Completely complete! Ineke van Doorn sings Portuguese beautifully, Marc van Vugt performing a driving bass part on guitar, sprinkling chords in between. And above it all the richly swinging alto sax of Van Kemenade.

PALINCKX - VAN KEMENADE - PALINCKX

Jacq Palinckx - guitar
Paul van Kemenade - alto sax
Bert Palinckx - double bass

The collaboration between these musicians dates back to October 1983. Under the heading Palinckx & Palinckx the three band members (plus drummer Frank van Oosterhout and tromboneplayer Hans Sparla) performed in (then) Paradoks in Tilburg. Quickly followed by a number of successful gigs, an appearance on national television (NOS), and the LP "Maartse Buien". In 1985, this particular formation ended, but the musicians kept in touch. In subsequent years, trombone-player Hans Sparla played in groups led by Palinckx and Van Kemenade, and Paul van Kemenade played on a more or less regular basis with the Palinckx brothers, as the Palinckx-Van Kemenade-Palinckx Trio.

This is a trio that welds different musical worlds, and three strong musical personalities, into a tightly-knit whole. With Palinckx-Van Kemenade-Palinckx , audiences are guaranteed melodic solos and compositions, exciting jazz music, cinematic soundscapes, straightforward rock, noise, blues, ballads, and so on, while improvisation is the thread binding everything together. Remarkable for an ensemble of chamber music strength, without even a drummer, to generate such diversity.

Palinckx-Van Kemenade-Palinckx Trio

A number of classic originals are featured (which include a new arrangement of the old hit song, "Maartse Buien"), also specially written new compositions by the three band members, as well as arrangements of work by Ornette Coleman, Frank Zappa, Roy Orbison, Beach Boys, Angelo Bandalamenti, and others.

Flamenco Crossover

FLAMENCO CROSSOVER

TRIO with:
Maurice Leenaars - guitar
Paul van Kemenade - altosaxophone
Herman van Haaren - elec. violin

PURE FLAMENCO & CROSSOVER

SEXTET with:
José Ligero - vocals & palmas
Sofía Yero - dance & palmas
Juan Reyes - dance & palmas

FLAMENCO CROSSOVER

Maurice Leenaars works with Paul van Kemenade since 1992 and since 1999 with Herman van Haaren. Both are internationally operating musicians *. For these combinations Leenaars writes the music. He doesn't feel the need to add their instruments to straight flamenco music because this has no musical value for Leenaars. The compositions are independent and based on a cross-over between flamenco and jazz but with the drama of flamenco in terms of harmony and melody.

CD: Maurice Leenaars Quintet - Live at Paradox (1998, with a.o. Paul van Kemenade)

Maurice Leenaars

Flamenco

Since 2000 Leenaars works with Ligero, Yero and Reyes. With them he found companions to play straight flamenco. Pure flamenco for Leenaars is to improvise within the classical setting of guitar, singing and dancing. Each stile in flamenco has its own rules and we are familiar with. Our way of working is based upon signs and cues.

CD: Maurice Leenaars FLAM3NCO Live (2004, with José Ligero and Juan Reyes)

The audience's reaction to mentioned projects is always one of having experienced something unique. Improvisation keeps us focussed, and our energy strikes the audience. In 2003 Leenaars had the opportunity to present these projects at Festival Mundial 2003. This diversity turned out to be a very special and already mature production and the audience was totally surprised.

* Both awarded with several national prizes a.o. the Podiumprijs en VPRO Boy Edgarprijs (Van Kemenade) and the NOS Jazzprijs (Van Haaren).
