Paul van Kemenade-altosax, Maurice Leenaars-flamenco guitar.
An exciting fusion of jazz and flamenco. The first time Van Kemenade and Leenaars played together was in 1992 during the Boulevard Theater Festival in Den Bosch. A fiery and interesting crossover of two different music disciplines. Since then they have performed many concerts together and made the record Live at Paradox. In 2017 Van Kemenade and Leenaars played a very successful sold-out tour in Russia.
Leenaars (1966) is one of the best flamenco guitarists of the Netherlands and altoist Van Kemenade (1957) is known for his collaborations with diverse musical disciplines and cultures ( South-West Africa).
Van Kemenade played with Ray Anderson, David Murray, Han Bennink Markus Stockhausen, the Metropole Orchestra, Jorge Pardo, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and many others. He did receive a lifetime achievement award in 1999 ( Boy Edgar Prijs ) and a Royal decoration (2007).
The Dutch magazine Jazz Nu about debute album Live at Paradox: ‘Most guitarists inspired by flamenco are mainly focused on the rhythmic aspects of this music. Rasgueos in super-fast tempos, the faster the better. Maurice Leenaars is more subtle. He is melodically engaged, and is concerned with the tone shaping.(…) The music breathes, while its tension increases and decreases. However, the most important merit might be introducing Paul van Kemenade into his music. This combination of savage alto sax with passionate guitar produces blood-curdling exciting moments’

Een enerverende samensmelting van jazz en flamenco. De eerste keer dat Van Kemenade en Leenaars samenspeelden was in 1992 tijdens het Boulevard Theater Festival in Den Bosch. Een vurige en interessante cross-over van twee diverse muziekdisciplines. Sindsdien hebben ze vele concerten samen verzorgd en de plaat Live at Paradox gemaakt. Van Kemenade (1957) is al jarenlang een begrip in de jazz- en geïmproviseerde muziek maar gaat vaak en graag kruisbestuivingen aan met hele andere muziekdisciplines zoals wereld-, renaissance- electronische-, klassieke- pop- en Afrikaanse muziek. Hij heeft meer dan 60 cd’s gemaakt en diverse prijzen mogen ontvangen zoals de Podium Prijs in 1984, in 1998/99 de VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs en in 2007 een koninklijke onderscheiding.
