The Podium Trio with the excellent trombonist Wolter Wierbos, guitarist Jan Kuiper and altoist Paul Van Kemenade was named after the ‘Podium Prijs’ which was the name of a Dutch jazzprize all three musicians won individually in 1983, 1984 and 1985. In the 90’s the trio played more than 200 concerts and lots of times US bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and drummer Cornell Rochester joined them. Sometimes with guests like David Murray, George Lewis, Kelvyn Bell a.o.
Nowadays they have all three their own individual career, all three played over 40 years in lots of bands and projects and won numerous awards . Every now and than, they come together to play concerts and every time it is a lot of fun! A unorthodox setting with trombone, altosax and guitar.

Vernoemd naar de destijds door de SJIN (Stichting Jazz In Nederland) ingestelde Podium Prijs, een aanmoedigingsprijs voor Nederlandse jazzmusici is in 1985 het Podium trio ontstaan. Toen Jan Kuiper in 1985 de Podium Prijs in 1985 won, vroeg hij de eerdere winnaars van 1983 (Wierbos) en Van Kemenade (1984) voor een concert. Sinds die tijd speelden ze tussen 1985 en 2000 honderden concerten in binnen-en buitenland, regelmatig met gasten als Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Cornell Rochester, David Murray, George Lewis e.v.a. Onvergetelijk waren hun concerten met het Amerikaanse funk/jazz tandem Tacuma / Rochester.
Nu vanaf najaar 2014 komen ze als trio weer samen, een hernieuwde samenwerking, alle drie uit 1957. Oude en nieuwe eigen gemaakte stukken wisselen elkaar af in de (nog steeds) niet alledaagse bezetting van trombone, altsax en gitaar. Wierbos, Van Kemenade en Kuiper zijn gelauwerde, zeer ervaren musici die in een oneindige trits van groepen spelen en gespeeld hebben en individueel vele cd’s gemaakt hebben.
